CGI script can cause proxy server to fail

Reported by jwheare | November 13th, 2009 @ 04:47 PM

I'm using the nph-sprockets.cgi script to serve concatenations. It's proxied behind Apache according to the same config described in the comments

Options +ExecCGI +FollowSymLinks
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond /sprockets.js !-f
RewriteRule ^sprockets\.js /nph-sprockets.cgi [P,L]

But this ends up with Apache throwing a 500 Internal Server Error:

malformed header from script. Bad header=HTTP/1.0 200: nph-sprockets.cgi

It seems that the [proxy|P] option would prefer not to get the HTTP status line from scripts it's proxying too, as removing that first header returns things to normal. Is there any other reason that status line is needed, or could this perhaps be an Apache cofiguration issue?
