After some investigation of this issue, I can report the following:

    • This is not a 'switch to strict' - report.
    • This bug is fixable.
    • There are actually two bugs here.

    What I've done:

    1) Updated to latest release today (1.6.1.0).
    2) Searched issue which got a fix by someone on the script.acul.us bugtracker and applied it to 1.6.1 .
    3) Tested this in IE6 and FF3.5 on Windows XP Sp2.
    4) Found out, that now the div isn't positioned correctly.
    5) Fixed this issue too.
    6) Appended the patch.

    What I'm going to do:
    1) Hoping someone testing this in more browsers on more OSs.
    2) Hoping someone will run the unit tests and that they won't fail.
2.2) Maybe someone needs to fix these tests too.
    3) Hoping you include this fix into next version of prototype.

In the meanwhile, I'll use my adjusted version and roll it out with our next release.
I'll post any problems my customer reports, but as they mostly use IE6, there won't be many of them I guess.

    ~Chris
