prototype 1.6.1rc3 cause ie8 crash

Reported by joy | August 6th, 2009 @ 09:06 PM

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<script type="text/javascript" src="prototype.js"></script>
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>

when you visit this page with ie8, right click it and select properties menu, the browser will crash.
the "html dtd" and "prototype.js" may conflict.
the problem seems to disappear when i removed the dtd title

    Does IE support real (application/xhtml+xml served) XML documents now? And doesn't that xml declaration on the first line throw IE into a quirks mode?

    1. There is no problem with version 1.6.0.1

    2. problem remains after remove the xml declaration on the first line

    Doesn't happen in compatibility view and seems to only break IE when trying to view the page's properties. We need a WTF tag.

    It does not happen for me in Windows 7 (32 bit) and Windows 2003 (32 bit), just Windows XP (32 bit)

    Happening to me too in Vista(32 bit) using latest prototype 1.6.1

    I investigated this problem and found out that all it takes to crash IE 8 on viewing properties is this little page:

    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <html>
      <head>
        <script type="text/javascript">
          Element.prototype.foo = "bar";
        </script>
      </head>
      <body></body>
    </html>

    So in order to fix this bug, you probably have to find a workaround on how to set prototype methods on the Element object in IE8...

    I'm running into the same problem. IE8 crashes with 1.6.1 and above (also 1.7) when I try to view the page properties. 1.6.0.3 and below do not crash IE8.

    When I comment out line 1902 in 1.7:

    //if (element) global.Element.prototype = element.prototype;

    and set Prototype.BrowserFeatures.SpecificElementExtensions to false, the crash doesn't happen anymore, but that probably breaks a lot of things.

    Removing the doctype or use quirksmode also prevents IE8 from crashing.

    Can anyone explain what the difference is between 1.6.0.3 and 1.7 in relation to extension of Element.prototype in IE8.

    I also noticed differences in Prototype.BrowserFeatures.ElementExtensions and Prototype.BrowserFeatures.SpecificElementExtensions in IE8:

    • 1.6.0.3 => false and undefined
    • 1.7 => true and true

    Is that intended behavior?
