Indian Diwali Facts

The festival comes on either October or November and the date is fixed by the location of the moon. This year Diwali falls on October 19. Diwali, which actually means ‘row of lights’, falls on the 15th day of Kartika, which is the spiritual period in the Hindu calendar. It is called the festival of lights because Diwali signifies the victory of light over darkness and good over wrong. To celebrate Diwali people set off fireworks, and lights dips called divas or diyas.
People are beaten out in their finest clothes on Diwali and many women get a unique henna design. Many businesses in India start their commercial new year during Diwali because of the festival’s bonds with Lakshmi who is the god of money. People share Diwali jokes to celebrate the charm of the festival.
The celebrations take place over five days, two days ere the main indication day of Diwali and two days after (October 17-21). Diwali is a festival of the Hindu religion but also has importance for Sikhs, Janists, and Buddhists. Also recognized as Deepavali, it is the biggest festival in India. Although Diwali is celebrated in the majority of India and worldwide it is not generally celebrated in the state of Kerala, because the festival never fully developed there over their past. People take the time during Diwali to clean their homes, light sparklers and have different sweets, savories and Diwali herbs in their homes
