Fav icon missing from website in IE 9

Reported by Michael Morris | September 23rd, 2010 @ 12:50 PM

Very minor annoyance, but the favorite icon is missing in IE 9 - probably because it's a png file. I noted this when I pinned the website to my Taskbar in Windows 7.

The probable reason Microsoft did this is that the ico format allows multiple image resolutions to be mapped to the same file. Windows 7 will support up to a 512x512 resolution for an ico - the taskbar uses 64x64 icons. Hence if the website provides an ico file for it's favicon the OS can map the icon to the correct context - 16x16 for the address bar, 32x32 for the taskbar in small icons mode and 64x64 for the taskbar in large icons mode.

That IE doesn't display the PNG at all is a bug and will be reported to Microsoft, but I would be willing to take the time to build out a icon file based on the current png file that will behave as described above if the administrators are willing to use it.
